Pitidoe the Color Maker

Pitidoe the Color Maker by Glen Dines

Hi Everyone! Happy to be back in Newfoundland after months of teaching and storytelling in Florida and a few days in my home state of Vermont! As most of you who have attended one of my storytelling sessions know, I was given a Christmas present in 1959 from my parents. A book titled Pitidoe the Color Maker. This book is now out of print and only used collectibles of the story exist, ranging from $100 to almost $900 for a single copy. I have been promising to record the story and share it with all of you and today, May 22, 2019 I make good on that promise. Tonight the story will be launched live on Facebook at 7:00 pm Newfoundland time, which is 5:30 Eastern Standard. I will also be posting a link to the video on Youtube and I hope you will watch and comment.

During the years I was classroom teaching, I used the story to introduce color. I would share the story and then let the students be the “Color Makers” by giving them a clear glass mixing bowl and RED, BLUE and YELLOW food coloring or paint. I would challenge them to create all the colors of the rainbow and shades in between using just these colors. Some years we even acted out the story using a Drama in the Classroom approach I learned in graduate school from Memorial’s Dr. Fred Hawksley. It would span a week or more and involve outside characters to visit as the Wizard Resk. I believe two of those years Resk was preformed by Newfoundland’s Terry Rielly!

The book is a classic and teaches many lessons about taking responsibility, making good choices and fixing your mistakes. My favorite question at the end of the story is to ask the students whether or not they think Pititoe should tell the wizard what happened while he was away?

A beautiful story, I hope you enjoy!
